Last night I was pleasantly surprised in watching the newest edition of the classic American Gladiators competition. Hosts Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali bring the credentials to the game that was once filled by the outdoorsman himself, Larry Csonka. Also, thankfully the lawn gnome known as Mike Adamle was left in obscurity. The Gladiators themselves also lived up to the expectations as each has a distinctive personality and the equally distinctive costume. I would actually like to see a little commentary from them during the broadcasts rather than the lame competitors, was that Asian guy really calling himself “the Spidermonkey.” Just think of some of the classic lines that might come out of Titan or Hellga’s mouth. People still watch a clip from Malibu during the first season where he described his perfect day on the beach. Overall the corny feel of the show held strong, owever the constant interviewing slowed the show down way too much and forced me to constantly flip back to a rebroadcast of some Chris Rock standup on Comedy Central. Now, I just want to start seeing this game featured on some sports broadcasts, it’s like WWE with the egos and gimmicks, while also providing a real competitive nature. I want to see Wolf howling during the open for Sportscenter or see that girl from last night bleeding from her face during the Ultimate Highlight. American Gladiators deserves more and I believe that the public agrees with me.
